Creighton University School of Dentistry prerequisites
What Creighton asks for in the 2026-27 cycle, as read from the school's own admissions page. 3 lines differ from the standard dental school set, marked below.
Coursework
- Biology with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
Two semesters with lab. As universal for dental school as it is for medical.
- General chemistry with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
Two semesters with lab. The DAT's general chemistry section assumes the full sequence.
- Organic chemistry with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
Two semesters with lab at most schools. A small number accept one semester plus biochemistry; confirm on the school's page before planning around it.
- Biochemistryrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
Roughly half of schools require a semester and the share grows every cycle. The DAT does not test it, but first-year dental biochemistry assumes you have seen it.
- Physics with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
Two semesters, algebra-based accepted essentially everywhere. A handful of schools want only one semester; the two-semester plan covers them all.
- English or writing-intensiverequired
2 semesters · 6 credits
Two semesters of English or writing-intensive coursework at most schools that name it.
- Anatomy and physiologyrecommended
3 credits
Named by a minority of schools and useful preparation for the first year regardless.
- Microbiologyrecommended
3 credits
Required at a meaningful minority and recommended widely; a strong pick for the spare science slot.
Experience hours
- Dentist shadowingrequireddiffers
65+ hours
Most dental schools ask for 100+ hours.
"The Creighton University School of Dentistry requires a minimum of 65 hours of shadowing in the dental profession." A firm requirement, and a lower floor than the 100 hours the baseline assumes, though shadowing in the dental profession is what counts and hours elsewhere in healthcare do not.
- Non-clinical volunteeringrecommended
100+ hours
Few schools publish a number; committees still read for a service habit held over time.
Letters
- Committee letterrecommended
1 letter
"one recommendation from their college's recommending committee" is a complete alternative to the whole three letter package, not a supplement to it.
- Science faculty letterrequired
2 letters
Two science letters, as the baseline assumes, but inside a fixed package: applicants submit "either three letters of recommendation, two written by instructors in the sciences and one written by an instructor and/or mentor in a field other than the sciences" or "one recommendation from their college's recommending committee." There is no free third slot to spend on a dentist.
- Non-science faculty letterrequiredextra here
1 letter
"one written by an instructor and/or mentor in a field other than the sciences." A mentor outside the sciences counts, so this need not come from a classroom instructor. The baseline does not carry this line at all.
- Dentist letternot required here
Creighton names no dentist letter. Its letters requirement is fully specified as two science instructors plus one non science instructor or mentor, or a single committee letter, so a dentist's letter has nowhere to go in the required set. Shadowing is still required separately, 65 hours minimum, and a dentist letter remains useful at other schools on the same list.
Also on the school’s page
Creighton's course list matches the dental baseline almost exactly: four 8 semester hour science sequences, each "at least two courses" including lab, in general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and general physics, plus "Biochemistry: 3 semester hours - lab is not required" and "English: 6 semester hours (at least two courses)". The two places it departs from the baseline are the shadowing floor, which is lower and stated as a hard minimum, and the letters package, which names a non science writer and no dentist. On scores the page publishes DAT minimums rather than averages: Academic Average 370, Perceptual Ability 360, Total Science 380, all on the current 200 to 600 scale. "All applicants must complete the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) administered by the American Dental Association (ADA), preferably no later than June of your final year of college." No minimum GPA is stated anywhere on the page.
