Coursework

  • Biology with labrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

Two semesters with lab. As universal for dental school as it is for medical.

  • General chemistry with labrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

Two semesters with lab. The DAT's general chemistry section assumes the full sequence.

  • Organic chemistry with labrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

Two semesters with lab at most schools. A small number accept one semester plus biochemistry; confirm on the school's page before planning around it.

  • Biochemistryrequireddiffers

    4 credits · lab

Most dental schools ask for 1 semester · 3 credits.

One line covers two subjects: "Microbiology or Biochemistry: 4 semester hours of lecture and lab (6 quarter hours)." Either course satisfies it, and KCU wants lecture and lab, which is unusual for biochemistry.

  • Physics with labrecommendeddiffers

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

Most dental schools ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab and list it as required.

Not a required prerequisite at KCU. Physics does not appear on the prerequisite list; the FAQ recommends physics 1 and 2 with lab, and physics coursework counts toward the 12 semester hour additional science block. Most other dental schools do require it, so an applicant with a wider school list should still take the sequence.

  • English or writing-intensiverequired

    2 semesters · 6 credits

Six semester hours, the usual amount, but the wording is broader than most: "English Composition/Technical Writing." A technical writing course counts.

  • Advanced biologyrequiredextra here

    4 semesters · 12 credits

A large open science block the baseline has no line for: "Additional Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics: 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours)," beyond the named prerequisites. Three courses' worth, and physics counts toward it, which is how a physics sequence fits into a KCU application even though physics is not itself required.

  • Anatomy and physiologyrequireddiffers

    1 semester · 4 credits

Most dental schools ask for 3 credits and list it as recommended.

Required outright where the baseline only recommends it, and anatomy specifically: "Human Anatomy: 4 semester hours (6 quarter hours)." Unlike the biology and chemistry lines, this one is not stated as lecture and lab.

  • Microbiologyrecommendeddiffers

    1 semester · 4 credits · lab

Most dental schools ask for 3 credits.

The alternative half of KCU's combined line: 4 semester hours of lecture and lab of microbiology satisfies the microbiology or biochemistry requirement outright. It is marked recommended rather than required only because biochemistry answers the same line.

Experience hours

  • Dentist shadowingrequired

    100+ hours

"The KCU-CDM does not require a minimum number of hours of shadowing experience," but "clinical dental experience (shadowing or practice)" is listed as an admission requirement, and the school recommends depth and breadth of dental experiences inclusive of general dentistry. No number is recorded because none is published; the required dentist letter still means real chairside time.

  • Non-clinical volunteeringrecommended

    100+ hours

Few schools publish a number; committees still read for a service habit held over time.

Letters

  • Committee letterrequireddiffers

    1 letter

Most dental schools ask for 1 letter and list it as recommended.

KCU's first choice for one of its three letters: "one from your pre-health advisor or committee." A pre-health advisor's individual letter counts here as well as a full committee letter.

  • Science faculty letterrequireddiffers

    1 letter

Most dental schools ask for 2 letters.

One rather than the baseline's two, and only as a stand-in: the pre-health advisor or committee letter "may substitute a science faculty member." Applicants whose college has a pre-health advisor or committee should use that letter instead.

  • Dentist letterrequired

    1 letter

Required, and the family exclusion is explicit: "one from a dentist (non-family member)." This is one of exactly three letters KCU asks for.

KCU's prerequisite list is shaped differently from the usual dental set. It reads: general biology, "8 semester hours of lecture and lab (12 quarter hours)"; microbiology or biochemistry, "4 semester hours of lecture and lab (6 quarter hours)"; general chemistry, "8 semester hours of lecture and lab (12 quarter hours)"; organic chemistry, "8 semester hours of lecture & lab (12 quarter hours)"; additional biology, chemistry, and/or physics, "12 semester hours (18 quarter hours)"; English composition or technical writing, "6 semester hours (8 quarter hours)"; and human anatomy, "4 semester hours (6 quarter hours)." Physics is not on that list. All courses must be "completed with a grade of C or better." "A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college is required," though the requirement may be waived for students at KCU-CDM partner colleges and universities. "DAT scores must be dated no later than 3 years prior to entry"; the FAQ gives the worked example that Fall 2025 entry needs scores from May 2022 or later. No minimum GPA or DAT number is published: admission runs on a whole file review weighing academic background, maturity, motivation, professionalism, recommendations and interview. The third of the three required letters is deliberately unrestricted, from "an individual who can attest to your academic strengths, abilities and fit for dental school," so it is not recorded against a writer key here. Letters and shadowing wording is cross-checked against the FAQ at https://www.kansascity.edu/admissions/faqs/CDM, which agrees with the requirements page.
