Half the usual organic sequence: 1 semester, 4 credits or 2 quarters, with lab. Tufts pairs the shorter organic requirement with a required semester of biochemistry.

Roughly half of schools require a semester and the share grows every cycle. The DAT does not test it, but first-year dental biochemistry assumes you have seen it.
- Physics with labrequired

Two semesters with lab, the usual amount, but physics is the single carve-out from Tufts' four-year college rule: "community college coursework, with the exception of Physics, is not accepted." If one prerequisite has to come from a community college, make it this one.

One semester rather than two, and it need not be an English department course: "1 semester writing-intensive" humanities or social science, which "may include History, English, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Government or Women's Studies." The writing-intensive part is the requirement.

"A minimum of 75 hours of exposure to the dental profession through shadowing experiences. At least 40 hours of shadowing must be completed with a general dentist." Lower than the 100 hours many schools name, but with a floor inside it: over half must be general dentistry, so a block of specialty hours alone will not satisfy it.

Not required at Tufts, one of three ways to fill the third slot: "2 Letters of evaluation from science professors and a third letter from another evaluator, such as a dentist, community service supervisor or research mentor." A pre-professional composite committee letter replaces the whole set.

Tufts lists seven prerequisite lines: biology, 2 semesters, 8 credits or 3 quarters, with lab; upper-level biology, 1 semester, 3 credits or 1 quarter, lab only if the institution requires one; inorganic chemistry, 2 semesters, 8 credits or 3 quarters, with lab; organic chemistry, only 1 semester, 4 credits or 2 quarters, with lab; physics, 2 semesters, 8 credits or 3 quarters, with lab; biochemistry, 1 semester, 3 credits or 1 quarter; and 1 semester of writing-intensive humanities or social science. Where the courses are taken is unusually tightly controlled: "All pre-requisite coursework (with the exception of the Physics courses) must be completed at an accredited four-year college/university," and "community college coursework, with the exception of Physics, is not accepted." "All pre-requisites must be taken for a letter grade. No Pass/Fail credits will be accepted," and prerequisites must be finished with a grade of C or higher, though the school encourages a B or higher to be most competitive. Advanced Placement credit does not clear a prerequisite: students who received AP credit "must either retake those courses at a four-year institution or take an equal number of credits in upper level coursework." On the DAT, scores reach Tufts from the ADA through AADSAS, "DAT scores obtained before June 1, 2024 are no longer valid," and the school publishes competitive figures on the current 200 to 600 scale of Academic Average 420, Reading Comprehension 410, Biology 410 and Total Science 410.
