OSU-COM answers the hours question directly and says no: "We do not have a required number of hours for shadowing/volunteering that students need to complete. However, we suggest that students gain a well-rounded range of experience by shadowing physicians in different fields to learn about medical specialties." Breadth across specialties is what it asks for instead of a total. A physician letter is optional, "although a DO is preferred," and two letters from physicians you have shadowed can satisfy the whole non-committee letter track. Note: the 500-hour figure on OSU-COM's site belongs to its Guaranteed Interview Program, not to general admission.

150+ hours

No required number: the same FAQ answer covers volunteering as well as shadowing. OSU-COM adds that you should not treat them as interchangeable: "It is important to attain both experiences for medical school."

100+ hours

OSU-COM rules research out as a requirement in plain terms: "Research can be an addition to your experience but is not part of the admission requirements." Useful to know if you are deciding where to spend a limited gap year.
