One semester. Most schools with a math requirement accept statistics or calculus; statistics is the more widely accepted of the two and the more useful for reading clinical research, so the baseline tracks it here. If a target school names calculus, its own requirements will say so.

No hours, and shadowing is offered as only one route among several: "You are encouraged to have at least some reasonable knowledge of the tenets and practice of osteopathic medicine. Do your research, attend info sessions, or shadow a D.O." The requirement is really knowledge of the profession, which reading and info sessions can also satisfy. SHSU-COM applies through TMDSAS, and its published letters line is a single sentence naming an evaluation letter or a Health Professions Evaluation. No physician letter is required.

150+ hours

No hours are published, but SHSU-COM is clear that it wants service to be ongoing rather than a completed box: "Continue community and healthcare-related service after graduation. It is our perspective that medicine is a profession of service and we look to find those who continue to engage themselves in these activities." Gap-year applicants should read that as an instruction not to stop.

100+ hours

Effectively expected at research-heavy MD programs and genuinely optional at many DO and community-focused schools. If research is not your path, put those hours into clinical work and say so clearly rather than padding a semester in a lab.

No published minimum

SHSU-COM applies through TMDSAS and its published letter requirement is a single line: "letters of evaluation or Health Professions Evaluation (due by Oct. 15)." The Health Professions Evaluation is the committee-packet route. No letter source is named as required, and in particular no physician letter is required.
