Maryland is one of the few schools that lists this as a requirement rather than a preference. Under the heading "Clinical Experience Requirement" it marks as Required: "Observing the doctor-patient interaction through: shadowing, scribing, interpreting." No hour minimum is published. Elsewhere the school says "The quality, rather than quantity, of these experiences should be emphasized" and that "Exposure to clinical medicine, and knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of medicine as a career, are expected."

50+ hours

Shadowing is named as one of the three ways to satisfy Maryland's required clinical experience (alongside scribing and interpreting), so it is not a separate hour bar, but it is one of only three activities the school will accept. No hours are stated.

Listed under its own heading, "Community Service Requirement": "Any activity in which you are volunteering your time to help other people. Effectively expected at research-heavy MD programs and genuinely optional at many DO and community-focused schools. If research is not your path, put those hours into clinical work and say so clearly rather than padding a semester in a lab.
