Coursework

  • Biology with labrequiredextra here

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

"Two semesters of Biology, each with labs (4 SCH each for a minimum of 8 SCH combined, including labs, in addition to the above A&P requirement)." This block sits on top of anatomy and physiology, not inside it.

  • General chemistry with labrequireddiffers

    1 semester · 4 credits · lab

Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab.

"One semester of Chemistry with lab (4 SCH including lab)." One semester, not the two-semester sequence; the second chemistry Emory & Henry asks for is biochemistry or organic.

  • Biochemistryrequireddiffers

    4 credits · lab

Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 3 credits.

"One semester of Biochemistry with lab OR Organic Chemistry with lab (4 SCH, including lab, in addition to the above chemistry requirement)." Applicant's choice between the two, but the laboratory is required either way.

  • English or writing-intensiverecommended

    2 semesters · 6 credits

Not required. The same strongly recommended preparation list names Expository Writing, English Composition, Technical Writing and Communications. No credit count is published.

  • Statisticsrequired

    1 semester · 3 credits

"One semester of Statistics or Biostatistics (3 SCH): Statistics courses within social or natural science departments (e.g., psychology, sociology) are acceptable."

  • Psychologyrecommendeddiffers

    1 semester · 3 credits

Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 3 credits and list it as required.

Not required. Psychology appears only on the preparation list: "Although not required, the Program strongly recommends the following courses as preparation," which names Introduction to Psychology or General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Developmental Psychology.

  • Geneticsrequiredextra here

    1 semester · 3 credits

"One semester of Genetics with or without lab (3 SCH in addition to the above requirements)." Uncommon as a hard PA prerequisite, and Emory & Henry will not waive it.

  • Anatomy and physiologyrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

"Two semesters of Human Anatomy and Physiology with Labs (4 SCH each for a minimum of 8 SCH combined, including labs). To meet this requirement, take Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 with lab (A&P I) PLUS Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 with lab (A&P II) or take Human Anatomy with lab PLUS Human Physiology." The course content is policed: "Human Anatomy and Physiology courses must cover all organ systems. Applied Anatomy and Physiology courses that do not cover all organ systems will not be recognized as fulfilling the prerequisite. Comparative, Survey, Elementary, Mammalian, Vertebrate, and/or Functional Anatomy; Exercise, Applied, Advanced, Survey, Vertebrate, and/or Mammalian Physiology courses may not replace the Human Anatomy and/or Human Physiology requirements." At least one human anatomy course must be finished at the time of application.

  • Microbiologyrequireddiffers

    3 credits · lab

Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 4 credits · lab.

"One semester of Microbiology with lab (3-5 SCH including lab)." Three credits including the lab is enough here, a lower floor than the baseline's four.

  • Medical terminologyrequireddiffers

    1 credits

Most PA programmes ask for 1 credits and list it as recommended.

"One semester of Medical Terminology (1 SCH)." A hard prerequisite here, not a recommendation, and it cannot be waived.

Experience hours

  • Patient care experiencerequired

    500+ hours

"All applicants must complete a minimum of 500 hours of hands-on direct patient care experience by the time of matriculation. Applicants may submit an application after completing a minimum of 250 hours of direct patient contact experience but the remaining hours, up to the required 500, must be completed and verified by April 1, prior to student matriculation in May of that calendar year. Students who fail to complete the required 500 hours... will have their invitation for a seat in the program revoked." Counting: "Medical scribe activities and other direct patient care activities (e.g., medical assistant, nursing assistant, dental assistant, radiology technician, mental health counselor) meet this requirement" and "Volunteer and Service-Work experience are acceptable." Not counted: "Activities caring for a family member or relative," "Activities caring for a single individual (e.g., personal care attendant)," and "Non hands-on direct patient care experience... (e.g., pharmacy tech, unit secretary, administrative positions and shadowing experiences)."

  • Healthcare experiencerecommended

    500+ hours

Many programs publish one combined healthcare figure instead of splitting patient care from healthcare exposure; where they do, the number lands here. Median published minimum is 500 hours.

  • PA shadowingnot required here

No shadowing requirement is published, and shadowing is listed among the experiences that do not count toward the patient care hours: "Non hands-on direct patient care experience do not fulfill this requirement (e.g., pharmacy tech, unit secretary, administrative positions and shadowing experiences)."

Letters

  • Science faculty letternot required here

The letter policy names "professors" and "academic advisors" with no science restriction, so nothing here asks for a science faculty letter specifically; that option is recorded on the any-discipline faculty line.

  • Faculty letter (any discipline)recommendedextra here

    1 letter

Of the three letters, the two beyond the clinician letter "must be from professional references such as professors, academic advisors, work supervisors, volunteer supervisors, or healthcare professionals." A professor of any discipline is one accepted source among several, not a requirement on its own.

  • PA letterrequireddiffers

    1 letter

Most PA programmes publish no minimum and list it as recommended.

Three professional letters are required at the time of application, and "One letter must be from a PA-C, NP, DO, or MD." A PA satisfies it, but so does a nurse practitioner or a physician; this is a clinician letter rather than a PA-specific one.

  • Supervisor letterrecommendeddiffers

    1 letter

Most PA programmes publish no minimum.

Not required by name. The two letters beyond the clinician letter "must be from professional references such as professors, academic advisors, work supervisors, volunteer supervisors, or healthcare professionals," so a work or volunteer supervisor is one accepted choice. "It is important that the letters of reference be completed by individuals who have first-hand knowledge of your skills, strengths, and weaknesses."

Emory & Henry (MPAS, Marion VA) publishes prerequisites in semester credit hours, and the list is longer than the baseline: A&P, two further semesters of biology, microbiology, chemistry, a second chemistry that is biochemistry or organic, genetics, statistics and medical terminology, all with lab except genetics, statistics and medical terminology. Three GPA floors, each calculated by CASPA: prerequisite GPA 3.0 or higher, "cumulative overall Science and overall BCP Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher," and "cumulative overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher for all undergraduate courses." "All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of 'C' or higher." A bachelor's degree in any field is required prior to matriculation. Testing: "Emory & Henry University requires all candidates to take the Graduate Record Exam," submitted through ETS with institutional code 7413, and "GRE scores must be taken within five (5) years of the application deadline to be considered valid." No minimum GRE score is published, and the PA-CAT is not mentioned. Recency: "It is preferred that prerequisite courses be completed within 10 years of the program application," a preference rather than a bar. Timing: "Up to (3) three of the prerequisite courses can be pending completion by the time of application. At least (1) one Human Anatomy course must be completed at the time of application." Substitutions: "we are unable to waive any prerequisite course requirements," "CLEP examination or advanced placement credit may not be used to meet any of the School's requirements," experiential learning is not a substitute, and quarter hours convert at 1 quarter hour divided by 1.5. Beyond the required list the program "strongly recommends the following courses as preparation": cell biology, cell physiology, epidemiology, immunology, pharmacology, virology, introductory, abnormal and developmental psychology, human growth and development, human sexuality, medical ethics, sociology or cultural anthropology, physics, quantitative analysis, expository writing, English composition, technical writing, communications and humanities. CASPA opens April 30, 2026 and closes January 15, 2027; matriculation is in May. Applicants whose undergraduate work was not in English may need a TOEFL iBT total of 90 with section minimums of 21 reading, 21 listening, 25 speaking and 23 writing. Students carry their own malpractice insurance at 1,000,000 per incident and 3,000,000 aggregate, and the college requires proof of COVID-19 immunization or a notarized religious or medical exemption.
