Coursework

  • Biology with labrequiredextra here

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

"Biology I and II," 8 semester or 12 quarter credits, "Labs required, equivalent to a two-semester sequence." The full introductory sequence, required in its own right alongside anatomy, physiology and microbiology. No recency window is attached to this row.

  • General chemistry with labrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

"General Chemistry I and II," 8 semester or 12 quarter credits, "Labs required, equivalent to a two-semester sequence." The full sequence, not one semester, and unlike the anatomy, physiology, microbiology and genetics rows it carries no recency window, so an older general chemistry sequence still counts.

  • Biochemistryrequired

    1 semester · 3 credits

"Biochemistry or Organic Chemistry," 3 semester or 4.5 quarter credits, "Lab not required, must be completed within 10 years." Either course answers it and neither needs its laboratory, but the ten year window applies.

  • English or writing-intensivenot required here

No English, composition or writing prerequisite appears in the nine-row table.

  • Statisticsrequired

    1 semester · 3 credits

"Statistics," 3 semester or 4.5 quarter credits, described as "College-level statistics." No recency window is attached to this row.

  • Psychologynot required here

Psychology is not named. The behavioral science requirement is the line psychology would most likely satisfy, but UNE asks for behavioral science generally rather than for psychology specifically, and it publishes no list of qualifying courses on this page.

  • Geneticsrequiredextra here

    1 semester · 3 credits

"Genetics," 3 semester or 4.5 quarter credits, "Must be completed within 10 years." Required outright, which is rare among PA programs, and it carries the ten year window even though no lab is asked for.

  • Anatomy and physiologyrequired

    2 semesters · 8 credits · lab

Two rows of 4 semester or 6 quarter credits each: "Anatomy & Physiology I or Human Anatomy" and "Anatomy & Physiology II or Human Physiology," both marked "Lab required, must be completed within 10 years." Separate anatomy and physiology courses satisfy this as well as the combined sequence. The ten year window runs to matriculation.

  • Microbiologyrequired

    1 semester · 4 credits · lab

"Microbiology," 4 semester or 6 quarter credits, "Lab required, must be completed within 10 years of matriculation."

  • Medical terminologyrecommended

    1 credits

Medical terminology is not a prerequisite at UNE. It appears under the program's "highly recommended coursework," so it will not block an application, but the phrase is stronger than a passing suggestion.

  • Social sciences and humanitiesrequiredextra here

    1 semester · 3 credits

"Behavioral Science," 3 semester or 4.5 quarter credits. UNE does not publish a list of qualifying courses on this page, so a psychology or sociology course is the obvious candidate but is not confirmed in writing. Check a less standard choice with the program before relying on it. No recency window is attached to this row.

Experience hours

  • Patient care experiencerequired

    500+ hours

"UNE PA applicants must complete a minimum of five hundred (500) hours of direct patient care experience before application submission." The experience must be "direct and hands-on, and generally takes place in a medical setting," and paid employment, volunteer work and academic internships all count. Note the gap the program itself publishes: competitive applicants typically bring 4,000 or more hours, so 500 is an eligibility floor and nothing more. The hours must be done before you submit, not before you matriculate.

  • Healthcare experiencenot required here

UNE publishes a direct patient care minimum and a PA shadowing minimum, and asks for no separate healthcare experience figure.

  • PA shadowingrequireddiffers

    20+ hours

Most PA programmes ask for 20+ hours and list it as recommended.

"UNE PA applicants must complete a minimum of 20 unpaid, in-person shadowing hours of a PA." Three conditions travel with that number and each of them disqualifies a common substitute: the hours must be unpaid, so shadowing during a paid shift does not count; in person, so virtual shadowing does not count; and with a PA, so physician shadowing does not count. Competitive applicants have 80 or more.

Letters

  • Science faculty letternot required here

Not required. A professor is one of the four acceptable writers for the two remaining letters, with no science discipline attached.

  • PA letterrequireddiffers

    1 letter

Most PA programmes publish no minimum and list it as recommended.

"Three letters of recommendation are required." "One (1) letter must come from a practicing PA (or PA-C)." This one is not optional and no other clinician substitutes for it, which is a second practical reason to build a real relationship during the shadowing hours rather than collecting the minimum 20 from strangers.

  • Supervisor letternot required here

Not required. Beyond the mandatory PA letter, "Two (2) letters should come from other healthcare providers, professors, supervisors, or co-workers," so a supervisor is one acceptable writer among four rather than a requirement.

UNE runs one of the longer prerequisite lists on this path, nine courses and 40 semester credits, and it is the general chemistry and biology sequences that make it long: both are required in full, two semesters each with labs. The grade floor is stated precisely: "All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C or better (C- grades are not acceptable)." Two GPA figures are checked, both as calculated by CASPA: a "BCP GPA of 3.0 or higher" and a "Last sixty (60) credit hours GPA of 3.0 or higher," so recent coursework can repair an early record here in a way it cannot everywhere. The recency window is ten years to matriculation and it is applied course by course rather than across the board: microbiology, the biochemistry or organic chemistry course, both anatomy and physiology courses and genetics each carry it, while the biology and general chemistry sequences, behavioral science and statistics are not marked with one. A bachelor's degree from a US regionally accredited institution, or its international equivalent, is required before matriculation. Credits are also given in quarter hours throughout, useful if your transcript is on that system. The admissions page names no GRE, PA-CAT or other standardized test requirement. Read the two published experience floors against the two published competitive figures: 500 patient care hours against 4,000 or more for competitive applicants, and 20 shadowing hours against 80 or more.
