Agnes Scott College Physician Assistant Program prerequisites
What Agnes Scott asks for in the 2026-27 cycle, as read from the school's own admissions page. 9 lines differ from the standard PA school set, marked below.
Coursework
- Biology with labrequiredextra here
lab
"General Biology w/ laboratory (2 courses)." Both semesters with lab, within the ten year window.
- General chemistry with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
"General Chemistry w/ laboratory (2 courses)," the full sequence with labs.
- Organic chemistry with labrequiredextra here
lab
"Organic Chemistry w/ laboratory (1 course)." One semester, and the laboratory is part of the requirement. Separate from and in addition to the "Additional chemistry or biochemistry" course.
- Biochemistryrecommendeddiffers
1 semester · 3 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 3 credits and list it as required.
Agnes Scott requires "Additional chemistry or biochemistry (1 course)" beyond general and organic chemistry. Biochemistry is one way to answer that line, not the line itself: another chemistry course satisfies it equally. The extra chemistry course is required even though biochemistry specifically is not.
- English or writing-intensivenot required here
Not on Agnes Scott's prerequisite list.
- Statisticsrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
"Statistics or biostatistics (1 course)."
- Psychologynot required here
No psychology or behavioral science course appears on Agnes Scott's prerequisite list.
- Anatomy and physiologyrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
"Human Anatomy and Physiology w/ laboratory (2 courses)," grades of C or better, C minus not accepted, completed within the last ten years.
- Microbiologyrecommendeddiffers
1 semester · 4 credits · lab
Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 4 credits · lab and list it as required.
Unusually for a PA program, microbiology is recommended here rather than required. It still helps the BCP grade point average, which carries its own 3.0 floor.
- Medical terminologyrecommended
1 credits
Required outright by nearly half of programs, which is more than its recommended level here suggests. Several refuse a certificate or a free online course and want transcript credit; a few teach it after acceptance instead.
Experience hours
- Patient care experiencerecommendeddiffers
1000+ hours
Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours and list it as required.
Not a bar to clear: prior work experience is not required for admission, and the program frames the number as a description of the pool. "More competitive applicants will meet the recommended minimum of 1,000 hours of direct 'hands-on' patient care experience, completed as either paid or volunteer experience." Volunteer hours count the same as paid ones here.
- Healthcare experiencerecommended
500+ hours
Many programs publish one combined healthcare figure instead of splitting patient care from healthcare exposure; where they do, the number lands here. Median published minimum is 500 hours.
- PA shadowingrecommended
20+ hours
Under a fifth of programs set a shadowing minimum; among those that do the median is 20 hours and a handful ask for 100 or more. Several count shadowing inside their experience total rather than separately, and a few have dropped it from scoring entirely.
Letters
- Science faculty letterrecommended
No published minimum
Only a handful of programs require a science faculty letter by name. An academic letter is welcome nearly everywhere and mandatory almost nowhere.
- PA letterrequireddiffers
1 letter
Most PA programmes publish no minimum and list it as recommended.
A practicing PA satisfies the healthcare letter but is not the only writer who can: "One letter of the three required letters should be from a healthcare professional (i.e., practicing PA, physician, nurse practitioner, healthcare supervisor)." Three letters are required and none may be more than one year old at submission.
- Supervisor letterrecommendeddiffers
1 letter
Most PA programmes publish no minimum.
A "healthcare supervisor" is one of the four writers Agnes Scott names for its single required healthcare letter, so a supervisor letter answers that slot rather than sitting beside it. The other two letters are the applicant's choice.
Also on the school’s page
Agnes Scott counts prerequisites in courses rather than credit hours: "Human Anatomy and Physiology w/ laboratory (2 courses)," "General Biology w/ laboratory (2 courses)," "General Chemistry w/ laboratory (2 courses)," "Organic Chemistry w/ laboratory (1 course)," "Additional chemistry or biochemistry (1 course)," and "Statistics or biostatistics (1 course)." Microbiology is recommended here rather than required, which is unusual on this path. Read the fifth line carefully: an additional chemistry course is required, and biochemistry is one way to satisfy it rather than the requirement itself. Every prerequisite must be "completed with grades of 'C' or better (not C minus)," and there is a firm recency window: "Prerequisite courses completed within last 10 years." GPA floors are "3.0 minimum cumulative overall grade point average - AND - 3.0 minimum BCP grade point average." On testing, "No GRE required," and no PA-CAT requirement is stated. Letters must be current, no older than one year at submission.
