Campbell University Physician Assistant Program prerequisites
What Campbell asks for in the 2026-27 cycle, as read from the school's own admissions page. 5 lines differ from the standard PA school set, marked below.
Coursework
- Biology with labrequiredextra here
No published minimum
"One semester of General Biology (for science majors)," a separate line from anatomy and physiology and microbiology. No laboratory is named and no credit hours are published, so bring the standard majors level course.
- General chemistry with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
Half the usual ask: "One semester of General Chemistry with lab (for science majors)," where most programs want the two semester sequence. The laboratory is required and, under the program's lab rule, must be taken in person. No credit hours are published.
- Biochemistryrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
Either chemistry answers it: "One semester of Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry." You do not need both, and no laboratory is named for this line.
- English or writing-intensivenot required here
No English composition or writing prerequisite appears on the requirements list. The non science lines are statistics or biostatistics and psychology.
- Statisticsrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
Statistics, not calculus. The exception is regional: several Oklahoma and Texas programs require college algebra instead and do not count statistics, so check those individually.
- Psychologyrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
General psychology. Many programs fold it into a broader social or behavioural science block that sociology or anthropology also satisfies.
- Geneticsrecommendedextra here
No published minimum
The only optional line on the list: "One semester of Genetics is recommended." Recommended rather than required, so it will not block an application, but it is the obvious way to strengthen a science record at a program that publishes a recommended science GPA.
- Anatomy and physiologyrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
The full A&P sequence with lab, the one course essentially every program names. Recency windows bite hardest here: several programs expire A&P specifically, one at three years, while leaving the rest of the list alone.
- Microbiologyrequired
1 semester · 4 credits · lab
Named by nearly every program, usually 3 or 4 credits. A minority accept it without the lab, so read the school's own line before dropping one.
- Medical terminologynot required here
Medical terminology is not among Campbell's prerequisites.
Experience hours
- Patient care experiencerequireddiffers
1000+ hours
Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours.
"1,000 hours of direct hands-on patient care experience" must already be in hand "at the time of application submission," so hours accrued after you submit do not count toward the floor. Hours earned for course credit are excluded. Pharmacy technician, veterinary technician and laboratory technician work is accepted as supplemental to this requirement rather than as the direct patient care that satisfies it.
- Healthcare experiencerecommended
500+ hours
Campbell names three roles it will count as supplemental to the patient care requirement rather than toward it: pharmacy technician, veterinary technician and laboratory technician. Useful on the application, but none of it moves you toward the 1,000 direct hands-on hours. No hour figure is published for this category.
- PA shadowingrecommended
20+ hours
"Recommended 20 hours of shadowing a Physician Assistant." Recommended rather than required, and PA specific rather than any clinician, so time with a physician does not answer this.
Letters
- Science faculty letterrecommended
No published minimum
Only a handful of programs require a science faculty letter by name. An academic letter is welcome nearly everywhere and mandatory almost nowhere.
- PA letterrecommended
No published minimum
Fewer than a third of programs require a letter from a PA. Most ask for a clinician letter that a PA, physician or nurse practitioner satisfies equally, so a PA letter is usually sufficient and rarely necessary.
- Supervisor letterrecommended
No published minimum
A letter from a work supervisor is required by about a quarter of programs. Many name no writer category at all and simply ask for three letters.
Also on the school’s page
Campbell lists its prerequisites by semester rather than by credit hour, so plan on the standard one semester course in each and confirm hours with the program. Everything needs "Completion of all prerequisite coursework with a grade of C or better," everything must be finished by December 31 prior to matriculation, and everything must come from a regionally accredited United States institution. Two rules stand out. First, there is no recency window at all: "No time limit on completed courses," which is unusual on a path where five and ten year windows are the norm and means old science coursework still counts here. Second, laboratories must be physical: "All prerequisite labs associated with course requirements must be completed in person. Online labs will not be accepted." AP credit earned in high school is accepted, though no advanced placement into the program is granted for prior medical education. On grades, the one hard floor is a minimum overall GPA and/or last 60 credit hours GPA of "3.2 at the time of application submission"; the prerequisite GPA above 3.4 and science GPA above 3.2 are published as recommendations, not cutoffs, so do not read them as bars. The GRE is required and dated: "The GRE must be taken within 5 years of application," with no minimum score published. The PA-CAT is not mentioned. A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited United States institution must be complete by the end of the spring semester before matriculation. This requirements page says nothing about letters of recommendation or references, so the baseline letter lines stand unmodified here and should be confirmed against CASPA and the program directly. No residency or in state preference is stated.
