Larkin University Physician Assistant Program prerequisites
What Larkin asks for in the 2026-27 cycle, as read from the school's own admissions page. 10 lines differ from the standard PA school set, marked below.
Coursework
- Biology with labrequiredextra here
lab
"General Biology with labs I and II." Two semesters, both with lab, required in addition to anatomy and physiology and to microbiology. Larkin publishes no credit count.
- General chemistry with labrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
"General Chemistry with labs I and II (two semesters)." Both semesters, both with lab; no credit count published.
- Organic chemistry with labrequiredextra here
lab
"Inorganic Chemistry or Organic Chemistry with lab (one semester)." One semester only, and an inorganic chemistry course with lab satisfies it in place of organic, which is rare and worth reading twice. Biochemistry is required separately.
- Biochemistryrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
"Biochemistry (one semester)," required outright rather than as an alternative to organic chemistry, which Larkin asks for separately.
- English or writing-intensivenot required here
No English or writing requirement appears in Larkin's prerequisite list.
- Statisticsrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
"Statistics or Calculus." Calculus satisfies this line, so statistics is not strictly mandatory here, but it is required in addition to the separate college math course.
- College mathematicsrequiredextra here
No published minimum
"College Math," listed as its own requirement alongside the statistics or calculus line, so one math course does not cover both.
- Psychologynot required here
Psychology as such is not required. It is one of five courses that can satisfy Larkin's single humanities or social science requirement, the others being developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, anthropology, and sociology.
- Anatomy and physiologyrequired
2 semesters · 8 credits · lab
"Human Anatomy and Physiology with lab." Larkin gives no credit count and no I and II designation for this line, unlike the biology and chemistry lines it does mark as two semesters. Preferred completion within the last five years.
- Microbiologyrequired
1 semester · 4 credits · lab
"Microbiology with lab," one course, no credit count published.
- Medical terminologynot required here
No medical terminology course appears in Larkin's prerequisite list.
- Social sciences and humanitiesrequiredextra here
No published minimum
One humanities or social science course, chosen from general psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, anthropology, or sociology. Psychology is one of five ways in, not the requirement itself.
Experience hours
- Patient care experiencerequireddiffers
1000+ hours
Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours.
"Consideration will be given to applicants who have a minimum of 1,000 hours of direct patient care experience." Read the wording carefully: the 1,000 hours are framed as what earns consideration rather than as a hard screen. Larkin names registered nurse, paramedic, EMT, physical therapist, nursing assistant, medical assistant, clinical research coordinator, and health educator or scribe among qualifying roles.
- Healthcare experiencerecommended
500+ hours
Many programs publish one combined healthcare figure instead of splitting patient care from healthcare exposure; where they do, the number lands here. Median published minimum is 500 hours.
- PA shadowingrecommended
20+ hours
Under a fifth of programs set a shadowing minimum; among those that do the median is 20 hours and a handful ask for 100 or more. Several count shadowing inside their experience total rather than separately, and a few have dropped it from scoring entirely.
Letters
- Science faculty letterrecommended
No published minimum
Only a handful of programs require a science faculty letter by name. An academic letter is welcome nearly everywhere and mandatory almost nowhere.
- PA letternot required here
No letter must come from a PA. "Applicants must submit 3 letters of recommendation," acceptable from healthcare professionals, professors, or supervisors, and "Recommendations submitted by relatives, personal healthcare providers, friends are not acceptable."
- Supervisor letternot required here
A supervisor letter is accepted but not mandated: supervisors are one of three acceptable categories of writer alongside healthcare professionals and professors.
Also on the school’s page
Larkin groups its prerequisites by area and, unusually, publishes no credit counts, only course and semester counts: human anatomy and physiology with lab; general biology with labs I and II; general chemistry with labs I and II, two semesters; inorganic chemistry or organic chemistry with lab, one semester; biochemistry, one semester; microbiology with lab; college math; statistics or calculus; and one humanities or social science course chosen from general psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, anthropology, or sociology. "Applicants must have completed the following prerequisite courses with a grade of 'C' or better." The recency window is a preference, not a bar: "Preferred science prerequisites completed within the last five years." GPA floors are likewise stated as preferences, a "Preferred minimum overall GPA of 3.0" and a "Preferred minimum science GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale." On testing, neither exam is mandatory: "GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and/or PACAT (Physician Assistant College Admission Test) are recommended but not required." Three letters of recommendation, from healthcare professionals, professors, or supervisors; "Recommendations submitted by relatives, personal healthcare providers, friends are not acceptable." Because Larkin names no credit hours, the credit figures shown against these lines come from the baseline, not from Larkin, and applicants should match the course and semester counts rather than a credit total.
