Lawrence Technological University Physician Assistant Program prerequisites

General chemistry is not among LTU's six prerequisites. The only chemistry named is the biochemistry or organic chemistry line.

750+ hours

Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours.

"You must have completed at least 750 hours of direct patient care experience as an employee in a medical office, hospital, or extended-care facility", with the hours done at the time of application. Accepted roles include CNA, medical assistant, EMT or paramedic, radiology tech, ECG tech, LPN or RN, phlebotomist, medical scribe, physical therapy assistant, surgical tech, respiratory therapist, chiropractor and athletic trainer, and military patient care such as combat medic is "also competitive." Scribing is capped: "Medical scribe experience can account for up to 500 hours of the total hours required but must be combined with actual hands on experience of at least 250 hours." The 750 is the floor, not the target: "the most competitive candidates will have 1000+ hours."

500+ hours

Many programs publish one combined healthcare figure instead of splitting patient care from healthcare exposure; where they do, the number lands here. Median published minimum is 500 hours.

20+ hours

Most PA programmes ask for 20+ hours and list it as recommended.

Required, not recommended, and PA only: "The program only accepts the shadowing experience with a Physician Assistant (PA)", and "Shadowing hours with other medical professionals, such as MDs, DOs, NPs, etc., are not accepted." Twenty hours minimum, complete at submission. "In-person shadowing is strongly preferred, but the program will accept a maximum of 10 hours of virtual shadowing." Name, title, email and phone of each PA must be listed in the application.

Only a handful of programs require a science faculty letter by name. An academic letter is welcome nearly everywhere and mandatory almost nowhere.

LTU says "Aim for a diverse range of recommendations" and lists "physician assistant, science professor, physician, nurse, previous employer (preferred in healthcare) and mentors" as examples. "Recommendation letters should not be from personal friends or family members." All three must come through CASPA, and additional letters are not considered.
