Coursework

The combined sequence is accepted here but only here: "Anatomy and Physiology I and II are accepted for this requirement; they are not accepted for physiology prerequisite." Taking A&P I and II therefore clears three credits of anatomy and leaves the separate upper-level physiology course still owing.

Direct patient contact is compulsory, but it lives inside the single 1,000 hour health care experience requirement rather than carrying a figure of its own, and the program asks whether your experience is "primarily comprised of direct patient contact" rather than setting an hour count for it. Treat the 1,000 as the only number Western Michigan states.

Western Michigan publishes one combined figure and does not split patient care from healthcare experience: "A minimum of 1,000 hours of health care experience, which must include direct patient contact." Two qualifiers change the arithmetic. "Shadowing experiences do not count toward this requirement," and "Volunteer hours may be considered at half of the total amount if direct patient care is evident," so unpaid work is discounted by half even when it is genuinely hands on. The program's own self-check questions point at what it wants inside those hours: "solid clinical experience at a competitive level of responsibility (e.g., paramedical or other allied health profession)" that is "primarily comprised of direct patient contact." Hours must be complete by the application deadline.

Letters

Fewer than a third of programs require a letter from a PA. Most ask for a clinician letter that a PA, physician or nurse practitioner satisfies equally, so a PA letter is usually sufficient and rarely necessary.

Western Michigan asks for only six prerequisite courses, all with published credit counts, and each one carries a trap the program spells out. The minimum requirements sit on a companion page, https://wmich.edu/pa/academics/apply, and are short: a bachelor's degree in any field earned before the fall start, "a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the most recent 60 credit hours" rather than a full cumulative floor, the six prerequisites "completed before Dec. 31, with a grade of C or better," and 1,000 hours of health care experience. Two general rules narrow what counts as a prerequisite: "Knowledge-based testing (like USMLE) does not satisfy any of the required prerequisites" and "All prerequisites must be stand alone courses," so a topic covered inside a broader course does not answer a line. The program publishes no recency window on the coursework. No admissions exam is used: "The GMAT, GRE, MCAT, etc. are not required for application to the WMU PA program," and the program's front page states flatly that "There is no standardized test requirement," which covers the PA-CAT and Casper as well. Neither page says anything about letters of recommendation, so the baseline letter lines stand unchanged rather than being contradicted; confirm the evaluator requirement in CASPA. Review is holistic across "more than 50 individual data points," though the program is candid that "applicants with stronger academic metrics (e.g., higher GPA) and more substantial, relevant healthcare experience are assigned greater weight within the scoring rubric." The cycle opens in mid-April with everything, including a $50 supplemental fee paid directly to the department, due December 1; grades from courses finished by the end of that fall semester are accepted.
