Lincoln Memorial University Physician Assistant Program, Knoxville prerequisites
What LMU Knoxville asks for in the 2026-27 cycle, as read from the school's own admissions page. 13 lines differ from the standard PA school set, marked below.
Coursework
- Biology with labrequiredextra here
7 credits
"Biology, 7 credit hours. Two separate Biology courses of choice. Both General Biology and upper-level Biology courses are acceptable. Lab for at least one of the biology courses is recommended." The lab is recommended, not required, and the microbiology course cannot double count: "Course fulfilling the Microbiology prerequisite will not count as Biology prerequisites."
- General chemistry with labrequireddiffers
7 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab.
General Chemistry I at 4 credit hours, where "lab is recommended," plus General Chemistry II at 3 credit hours, where "lab not required." For both rows, "any combination of inorganic, organic, or biochemistry coursework will be considered," but a course used for the separate organic chemistry line cannot also count here.
- Organic chemistry with labrequiredextra here
3 credits
"Organic Chemistry, 3 credit hours. Biochemistry also acceptable. Lab not required. Course fulfilling the Organic Chemistry prerequisite will not count towards additional Chemistry prerequisites." One course satisfies this line, whether it is organic chemistry or biochemistry.
- Biochemistrynot required here
Not a separate requirement. Biochemistry appears only as an accepted substitute, either for the 3 credit organic chemistry line, "Biochemistry also acceptable," or within the general chemistry rows, "any combination of inorganic, organic, or biochemistry coursework will be considered."
- English or writing-intensiverequireddiffers
1 semester · 3 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 6 credits and list it as recommended.
Required here rather than recommended, at half the baseline's credits: "English Composition, 3 credit hours. Completion of English Composition. Other writing-intensive courses also acceptable."
- Statisticsrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
"Statistics, 3 credit hours. This course should cover descriptive and inferential statistics."
- Psychologyrequired
1 semester · 3 credits
"General Psychology, 3 credit hours. Psychology course of choice also acceptable. A psychology course covering the full spectrum of psychological development from childhood to advanced age or an abnormal psychology course will best prepare an applicant for success in the Program."
- Anatomy and physiologyrequireddiffers
7 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab.
Two rows in LMU's table: Human Anatomy and Physiology I at 4 credit hours, with "Human Anatomy (4 credit hours) also acceptable," and Human Anatomy and Physiology II at 3 credit hours, with "Human Physiology (4 credit hours) also acceptable." For both, "Lab is recommended," not required, and "this course must focus on the human body and cover all organ systems as stand-alone course or as two-course combination." Both carry a recency window: "This course must be completed within 8 years of application."
- Microbiologyrequireddiffers
3 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 4 credits · lab.
"Microbiology, 3 credit hours. Lab not required. Course fulfilling the Microbiology prerequisite will not count as Biology prerequisites."
- Medical terminologyrequireddiffers
1 credits
Most PA programmes ask for 1 credits and list it as recommended.
A hard requirement here: "Medical Terminology, 1 credit hour. This course should cover all organ systems. Certificates are not accepted." A transcripted course is needed, not an online certificate.
Experience hours
- Patient care experiencerecommendeddiffers
500+ hours
Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours and list it as required.
LMU publishes no patient care minimum and does not separate patient care from healthcare experience in its requirement: "The Program does not require a minimum number of health care experience hours; however, student applicants are encouraged to seek out opportunities to obtain health care experience in either paid or volunteer positions in a variety of health care settings, as these experiences are valuable to professional growth." Healthcare experience is still one of the seven listed evaluation criteria. The baseline's 1000 hour planning floor is not this program's rule.
- Healthcare experiencerecommended
500+ hours
"The Program does not require a minimum number of health care experience hours." LMU uses the single phrase "health care experience" and does not split it into patient care and non patient care buckets, so no figure is recorded on either line.
- PA shadowingrequireddiffers
24+ hours
Most PA programmes ask for 20+ hours and list it as recommended.
"Student applicants must include a minimum of 24 hours of shadowing a PA, MD, DO, DPM, or NP before consideration for a student applicant interview. Shadowing must be completed through direct observation of patient interactions by a PA, MD, DO, DPM, or NP. Only in-person shadowing will be considered." LMU draws a hard line against counting work: "Work hours (patient care experience) completed with a PA, MD, DO, DPM, or NP do not meet the Program's shadowing experience requirements." Unlike most programs, this is a screening threshold: the shadowing must be submitted before an interview is considered.
Letters
- Science faculty letternot required here
Not named. Of the three professional evaluation letters, only the clinician letter has a specified writer.
- PA letterrequireddiffers
1 letter
Most PA programmes publish no minimum and list it as recommended.
Three letters total, one of which must come from a clinician: "Student applicants must submit three professional evaluation letters to CASPA that address the student applicant's readiness for the rigor of the program's curriculum and professional conduct. At least one evaluation letter must be from a PA, MD, DO, DPM, or NP, including their observations of the student applicant in the clinical setting." A PA satisfies this line, but so does an MD, DO, DPM, or NP. "The Program does not consider personal or family recommendations."
- Supervisor letternot required here
LMU requires three professional evaluation letters and names a writer for only one of them, the PA, MD, DO, DPM, or NP letter. No supervisor letter is specifically required.

LMU Knoxville publishes an eleven row prerequisite table with credit hours and clarifications, and its application is separate from the other LMU PA sites. GPA floors are low and explicit: "A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 and a minimum cumulative science GPA of 2.8 are required for application," calculated by CASPA, though recent cohorts matriculated near 3.6 overall and 3.5 science. The GRE is required, not optional: official scores must go to DI Code 4376, "the date of the GRE scores must be within five years of the date of application," and "there is no minimum GRE score required for application; however, the Program considers applicants who scored at or above the 50th Percentile in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and/or analytical writing as more competitive." Prerequisites need a C or higher, must be completed in the United States at a regionally accredited college or university, and "student applicants with greater than 3 prerequisite courses to complete prior to their student applicant interview are not considered for admission." The anatomy and physiology courses carry an eight year recency window; more broadly, "survey science courses are not considered" and "student applicants are advised to complete a thorough review of course material for any science course completed greater than four years prior to matriculation." Admissions are rolling with a January 15, 2027 CASPA deadline for the class entering fall 2027, interviews start September 2026, and interviewing continues until the class of 100 fills. Preference goes to applicants living in the Appalachian region of TN, KY, VA, NC, OH, WV, PA, AL, and GA on a three tier system with Appalachian Tennessee first, and applicants with military service are also given preference. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or approved temporary residents.
