Coursework

  • General chemistry with labrequireddiffers

    1 semester · 4 credits · lab

Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab.

One semester rather than the usual two: General/Inorganic Chemistry (3 semester credit hours) plus General/Inorganic Chemistry Lab (1 semester credit hour).

  • Biochemistryrequireddiffers

    4 credits · lab

Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 3 credits.

"Organic/Bio Chemistry course (3 semester credit hours)" plus its lab (1 semester credit hour). Organic chemistry or biochemistry satisfies this single line; a laboratory is required with it.

  • English or writing-intensivenot required here

    Not on Toledo's prerequisite list.

  • Statisticsrequired

    1 semester · 3 credits

"College-level math or Statistics (3 semester credit hours)." Any college-level mathematics course satisfies it; statistics is not specifically required.

  • Psychologyrequireddiffers

    2 semesters · 6 credits

Most PA programmes ask for 1 semester · 3 credits.

"Psychology (6 semester credit hours)," two courses' worth; specific psychology courses are not named.

  • Anatomy and physiologyrequireddiffers

    6 credits

Most PA programmes ask for 2 semesters · 8 credits · lab.

Anatomy (3 semester credit hours) and Physiology (3 semester credit hours), or "Six credit hours of Anatomy & Physiology (i.e., A&P I and II) will be accepted." No laboratory is stated for these courses. Higher grade floor than the rest: "Applicants must have grades of B- or better in Anatomy and Physiology." Eight-year recency window.

  • Microbiologyrequired

    1 semester · 4 credits · lab

Microbiology (3 semester credit hours) plus Microbiology lab (1 semester credit hour).

  • Medical terminologyrequireddiffers

    1 credits

Most PA programmes ask for 1 credits and list it as recommended.

A required course here: "Medical Terminology (1 semester credit hour)." Eight-year recency window.

Experience hours

  • Patient care experiencerecommendeddiffers

    500+ hours

Most PA programmes ask for 500+ hours and list it as required.

No minimum: "Healthcare experience is not required. However, the program does see the benefits of having some healthcare experiences." The program does not split patient care from healthcare experience.

  • Healthcare experiencerecommended

    500+ hours

Not required and no number published; see the patient care line.

  • PA shadowingrecommended

    20+ hours

Under a fifth of programs set a shadowing minimum; among those that do the median is 20 hours and a handful ask for 100 or more. Several count shadowing inside their experience total rather than separately, and a few have dropped it from scoring entirely.

Letters

  • Science faculty letterrecommended

    No published minimum

Only a handful of programs require a science faculty letter by name. An academic letter is welcome nearly everywhere and mandatory almost nowhere.

  • PA letterrecommended

    No published minimum

Fewer than a third of programs require a letter from a PA. Most ask for a clinician letter that a PA, physician or nurse practitioner satisfies equally, so a PA letter is usually sufficient and rarely necessary.

  • Supervisor letterrecommended

    No published minimum

A letter from a work supervisor is required by about a quarter of programs. Many name no writer category at all and simply ask for three letters.

Toledo's prerequisites page lists semester credit hours: Anatomy (3), Physiology (3), General/Inorganic Chemistry (3) plus lab (1), Organic/Bio Chemistry (3) plus lab (1), Microbiology (3) plus lab (1), Psychology (6), College-level math or Statistics (3) and Medical Terminology (1). "Six credit hours of Anatomy & Physiology (i.e., A&P I and II) will be accepted" in place of separate anatomy and physiology. Grades: "The following prerequisites must be completed with a grade of 'C' or better with the exception of Anatomy and Physiology courses. Applicants must have grades of B- or better in Anatomy and Physiology." Recency: "The prerequisite coursework identified above must be completed within eight (8) years of potential matriculation." Courses must come from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. The admissions page (https://www.utoledo.edu/med/grad/pa/admissions.html) adds: "Overall GPA of 3.20 (CASPA Calculated)" and "Prerequisite GPA of 3.20 (CASPA Calculated)"; "Bachelor's degree completed by June 15 of the year of potential matriculation"; "Applicants may have up to three pending courses that must be completed by June 15." Testing: the GRE is not mentioned on either page; "Applicants are recommended to take the PA-CAT. Applicants are recommended to complete the Casper test." Experience: "Healthcare experience is not required. However, the program does see the benefits of having some healthcare experiences." Shadowing is not mentioned. Neither page states a letters of recommendation requirement, so the baseline letter lines are left in place unmodified. The CASPA cycle opens April 28 and closes September 1; the UToledo application fee is also due September 1.
